Determining Sludge Fertilization Rates for Forests from Nitrate-N in Leachate and Groundwater’

چکیده
hfunlclpal and papermill wastewater sludges were ipplled to conifer and hardwood forests growing on sand soils (Entic Haplorthods, Spodic Udipsamments, and Alfic Haplorthods), In northwestern Lower Michigan where annual preclpltatio~~ averaged 765 mm/y, to Investigate the Impact of sludge on nitrate-N concentntlons In soil water and groundwater. During the first growing season after treatment, all forms of N in groundwater and soil water remained near background levels excep( under aspen (Populusgrondldcnrora Mlchx.) plots treated with 46 dry Mg munldpal sludge/ha. Following the flnt spring snowmelt period after sludge was applied (spring 1977), nltrateN concentrations exceeded the 10 mg/L potable water standard In groundwater under plots treated with 16 or more dry Mg/ha andigested papermill sludge. Soil leachate exceeded 10 mg/L under pine pladtations receiving 19.3 dry Mg/ha and aspen sprout stands IVceivlng 2.3 dry Mg/ha or more anaerobically digested munldpal

Leaching of PCBs and Nutrients from Soil Fertilized with Municipal Sewage Sludge
Although sewage sludge is a rich source of nutrients for arable farming and soil improvement, it can also be a source of pollutants. The effects of the land application of sludge on the PCB and nutrient content of leachate were investigated using cylindrical 650 mm length columns filled with poor quality soil. Treatments included no fertilization (control), fertilization using a 62.5 t/ha dose ...
متن کاملElevated nitrate levels in the groundwater of the Gaza Strip: distribution and sources.
Seven years of monitoring groundwater in the Gaza Strip has shown that nitrate was and still is a major groundwater pollutant. The objectives of this research were to study the distribution of NO(3)(-) in the groundwater of the Gaza Strip and to identify the sources of NO(3)(-) in the Gaza aquifer system by assessing nitrogen and oxygen isotopes. The most recent samples collected in 2007 showed...
متن کاملYield and nitrogen leaching in maize field under different nitrogen rates and partial root drying irrigation
Irrigation water is limiting for crop production in arid and semi-arid areas. Furthermore, excess nitrogen (N) application is a source of groundwater contamination. Partial root drying irrigation (PRD) can be used as water saving technique and a controlling measure of groundwater N contamination. The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the effect of ordinary furrow irrigation (OFI...
متن کاملClipping contributions to nitrate leaching from creeping bentgrass under varying irrigation and N rates
The effect of clipping management on nitrate (NO3) leaching beneath creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) has received little attention. The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of returning grass clippings to creeping bentgrass in combination with N fertilization and irrigation on NO3 leaching. A 30-week long experiment was conducted using fairway-height creeping bent...
متن کاملInoculation of a submerged filter for biological denitrification of nitrate polluted groundwater: a comparative study.
Activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant and pure culture of Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava were utilized for the development of a denitrifying biofilm in a submerged filter in order to remove nitrate from polluted groundwater. Nitrate removal efficiency, nitrite accumulation, turbidity, COD and faecal indicators persistence in the treated water were determined at different superficial hy...
